Q&A with Tim “Tweet” Twietmeyer

GU ATHLETE: Tim “Tweet” Twietmeyer
SPORT: Ultra running
BIRTHPLACE: Rockville Centre, New York, 1958
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Auburn, California

Proudest athletic accomplishment?
25 sub-24 hour finishes at Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run.

Superstitions for training or competition?
I’ve never done a training run that finished on the track at Placer High (finish of Western States). I save that for the real thing.

Funny racing/training story?
While leading the WS 100 at mile 94, I did battle with a skunk for the trail. The skunk finally relented and left the trail. I can only imagine that my scent was more offensive than the skunk’s.

What’s the strangest thing a spectator has ever said to you while you were racing?
“Don’t know how you do so well at 100-miles when you’re not that good at marathons and 50’s.”

What characteristics do you most respect in your competitors?
Unrelenting determination in any conditions.

If you were not a pro athlete, what would you do professionally?
I’m not a pro, but if I didn’t need a real job, I’d be a sports broadcaster.

Song title that best fits your personality/spirit?
Don’t Stop Believing (Journey).

How do you reward yourself when you reach a key goal?
Ice cream and new electronics.

What’s the most creative way you’ve ever carried your GU?
In my wallet, just like money.

Personal causes you’re involved in?
Trail preservation and maintenance.

A few things people don’t know about you?
I like to sing, particularly a cappella. I’m a better runner than a singer.
