Proudest athletic accomplishment?
One moment in my athletic career that constantly pops into my head is the day that I learned how to “take it to the next level.” My senior year of high school at the first cross country meet of the season, I ran my typical first mile, but then decided that even though it hurt I wasn’t going to slow down or concede a single spot to my opponents. I found a way to keep digging deeper and deeper into a reservoir of unknown speed. I pushed through the pain, suffering, and burning legs to cross the line 3rd out of 750. To this day, I am so proud of being able to overcome that major mental barrier.
Funny racing/training story?
A couple of buddies and I went for a long ride on the weekend, in search of a Krispy Kreme. After 3.5 hrs we finally found one, and believe me, donuts have never tasted so good. On another ride a friend was talking about the new parts he needed for his motorcycle. We just happened to come upon one of the parts he mentioned laying on the side of the road. The only problem was that it was a huge chunk of plastic, so we tied a couple of tubes together and strapped it to his back for the 15 mile ride home.
Hobbies?
I’m a video game dork. I love building things or working on anything mechanical. I also enjoy sewing. Seriously.
Favorite book?
I honestly don’t remember the last time I read a book. Unless you count reading ‘The Little Engine That Could’ to my cross country runners before a meet.
If you were a flavor of GU, what would you be?
Peep’s Flavor. I just can’t get enough of those soft, gooey, sugar birdies. They are just like me – sugary, hyper, crazy colors, soft back end, and just a little odd.
What’s the most creative way you’ve ever carried your gel?
I had some long argyle socks on for one ride and stuffed them with GU because my jersey pockets were already full.
Favorite moment in history?
1994. The release of ‘Dumb and Dumber’.
Ultimate goals?
I’d like to win a world championship or two, but the most important thing is to have fun, whatever I do.
Weakness?
Does having the swim technique of an epileptic ostrich count as a weakness, or an area for improvement?
Three things people don’t know about you?
For about 16 years of my life I had 11 toenails, but not anymore. I am the world’s worst multitasker.
I dream of someday marrying Jennifer Connelly - she’s amazing.
